Uncool School

 2-20-2003
I'm hungry, so I was about to keep this article the same as yesterday's "Hungry Song" and call it an encore perfomance because I have tests to study for.  ... But,  I have a little itty bitty bit of commentary about school.

First of all, this website could be better if I had more time.  I could have more time if I wasn't trying to study stuff I'll probably never use again in my life.  School is great when it teaches you cool stuff like what you'll need to know one day for your job, like how to design cars or make websites.  But I'm taking core classes, and it's not so hot.

Here's a mathematically complex scientific diagram to show what school is all about academically:

good grades on tests > good grade in the class > good GPA > diploma

Please note how 'learning' is missing from the equation.  Many people assume studying for tests teaches students stuff, but don't fool yourselves people.  Many students learn it just for the test.  Why?  Because they'll never really need it again.  Maybe if they're ever on Jeopardy or something, but otherwise, not really.

I praise those schools that don't have conventional tests (New College in Sarasota), and those majors that have major-specific classes early in the curriculum.  Mad Snod props for them!

True, taking core classes can build character/ teach life lessons, but one of the things I was looking forward to about college was getting to learn an off the chain profession.  I still look forward to earning the official occupational title of 'Off The Chainer'.  (Picture Job Day at at preschool: "Here's my daddy, and he's an off the chainer!")  School doesn't have to be uncool, 'cause it's not uncool.....
WHEN YOU TAKE OFF THE CHAIN, COOL CLASSES!
